Personal Training vs. small Group training. what’s best for you?

Small Group Training vs. Personal Training: Which One Is Actually Right for You?

If you’re looking for a gym in Hoboken or Jersey City and trying to decide between personal training and small group training, this guide will give you a clear answer – not a vague “it depends.” Both options have genuine advantages. The right choice depends on specific factors we’ll walk through below.

At The FIT Lab, we offer both. We also watch members move between them. So this isn’t a sales pitch for either – it’s an honest breakdown of what each actually delivers, what it costs, and how to know which fits your situation.

What personal training actually is (and isn’t)

Personal training means a dedicated coach whose complete attention is on you for the entire session. They’re watching every rep. They’re adjusting your program in real time based on how you’re moving today, not how you moved last week. They’re available to answer questions between sets. The session is built entirely around your goals, your history, and your body.

What personal training isn’t: a guarantee of faster results simply because it costs more. The quality of outcomes in personal training depends almost entirely on the quality of the coach. A great coach in a small group setting will outperform a mediocre one in a 1:1 setting every time.

What small group training actually is (and isn’t)

Small group training keeps session sizes small enough – typically 3 to 6 people, depending on the studio – that each person still receives meaningful individual attention. At The FIT Lab, small group sessions are coached, not just supervised. Trainers watch form, give real-time corrections, and adjust your specific program within the group structure.

What small group training isn’t: a group fitness class. This is an important distinction. A spin class, a HIIT class, a yoga class – these are group experiences where instruction is broadcast to the room. Small group personal training keeps individual programming and attention at the center, just shared across a small number of people.

“It’s a personal training setup but a fraction of the cost. The trainers are great and they focus on technique and safety.”

The honest cost comparison

Personal training in a major metro area typically runs between $110 and $150 per session at a quality studio, and significantly more at premium facilities. For someone training three times per week, that’s $960-$1,800 per month.

Small group training at a comparable quality level typically runs 40–60% less than private sessions, depending on the studio and package. For many people, this is the difference between  “I can’t afford consistent coaching” and “I can actually make this a permanent part of my life.”

Consistency over time is the single most important variable in fitness outcomes. A training format you can sustain for two years will produce dramatically better results than a more expensive format you can only afford for three months. This is often the most persuasive argument for small group training.

Five situations where personal training is the right call

1. You’re recovering from a significant injury or surgery and need a program built around very specific physical limitations that change frequently.

2. You have highly specific athletic goals – competitive powerlifting, sport-specific performance, preparing for a law enforcement physical test – that require detailed, session-by-session programming.

3. You’re brand new to exercise and extremely self-conscious. Some people genuinely need the privacy of 1:1 to feel safe enough to learn. That’s legitimate, and it typically resolves within a few months.

4. Your schedule is completely unpredictable and you can only train at irregular times that don’t align with group schedules.

5. You want maximum customization and are willing to pay for it. There’s nothing wrong with this reason.

Five situations where small group training is the better choice

1. You want coached, progressive strength training but can’t justify the cost of private sessions indefinitely. This covers the majority of people looking for quality training.

2. You’re returning to the gym after time off and want structure and accountability without the higher commitment of private training right away.

3. You thrive with a community around you. Many people find that training alongside others — even strangers who become familiar faces — provides a layer of motivation that solo or 1:1 sessions don’t replicate.

4. You’ve been training consistently for a while but feel like you’ve plateaued with generic programming. Coached small group training offers personalized progression without the full cost of private sessions.

5. You’re training during pregnancy or postpartum and want expert coaching in a supported, manageable environment.

“The small group training has been amazing – I finally have the support I need while not breaking the bank. The coaches are genuinely invested in my progress.”

The path most of our members take

In practice, many of our members start with personal training – 4 to 8 weeks of 1:1 sessions to establish a movement foundation and build confidence – then transition into small group training for ongoing consistency. Some stay in personal training. Some mix both. What matters is that they keep showing up.

If you’re brand new, or haven’t trained in years, starting with a few personal training sessions before moving into a group is a smart use of money. You come into the group with better form, a clearer sense of your body, and a trainer who already knows your history.

What makes The FIT Lab different from other options in Hoboken and Jersey City

There are large gyms in Hoboken and Jersey City that offer personal training add-ons. There are group fitness studios. There are big-box facilities with small group programs in name but not in practice.

The FIT Lab is specifically built around the coaching relationship. Every session – personal training or small group – is led by a trainer who knows your program, your history, and your goals. Sessions are intentionally small. Trainers are not interchangeable. You’re not a membership number.

We’ve had members with us for nearly a decade. We’ve worked with members through pregnancy, injury recovery, and major life transitions. The through-line is not that we offer the cheapest option or the most convenient location. It’s that people who train here get better — and they stay.

How to decide

Ask yourself these three questions:

  • Do I have a specific physical limitation or highly specialized goal that requires maximum 1:1 customization?
  • Can I sustain the cost of private training consistently for at least 6–12 months?
  • Do I do better working alone with a coach or with other people around me?

If your answers point toward personal training – start there. If they point toward small group — you’re in the majority, and the coaching quality here means you won’t be sacrificing results.

Either way, the most important decision isn’t personal versus group. It’s starting – and starting with people who actually know what they’re doing.
